Point of Sale adds SumUp payment terminals

A new Community module, pos_sumup, connects SumUp card readers to Odoo Point of Sale. It landed in 20.0 on October 22 as a backport from master, and covers pairing, payments, cancellations and full or partial refunds.

SumUp card readers can now take payments directly from Odoo Point of Sale. The new pos_sumup module was merged into the 20.0 branch on October 22 (a9c83675). It is a backport: the same module landed in master two weeks earlier, so it will also be part of the next version.

SumUp is popular with small shops, cafés and market sellers in Europe. Until now, using its readers with Odoo meant a third-party connector or a separate device next to the till.

What it does

According to the commit, the integration covers the full payment flow from the POS:

  • Pairing a reader with a code shown on its screen
  • Paying — the amount is pushed from the POS to the reader
  • Cancelling a payment in progress
  • Refunding a transaction, fully or partially

SumUp offers a virtual Solo reader for testing without hardware.

Setting it up

The module adds SumUp as a terminal provider on POS payment methods. The SumUp tab on the payment method asks for:

Field What it is
SumUp API key Created in the SumUp developer dashboard. Visible only to administrators.
Merchant code Your short SumUp merchant identifier, e.g. MK10CL2A
Pairing code Shown on the reader’s screen; used once to register it
Reader ID Filled in after pairing (rdr_…), or entered directly to reuse a reader already registered with SumUp

When paired, the reader appears in your SumUp account as “Odoo – payment method name”.

How it works

Odoo talks to SumUp’s cloud API (api.sumup.com) rather than to the reader over the local network. Payment results come back to Odoo through a webhook at /pos_sumup/notification. Each request carries a signed token tied to the payment method, so notifications that don’t match a known SumUp payment method are ignored and logged.

Two practical consequences:

  • Your Odoo must be reachable from the internet so SumUp can deliver payment results. That is automatic on Odoo Online and Odoo.sh. For on-premise installs, check that your public URL is reachable.
  • No IoT Box is needed. The reader only needs its own connection to SumUp.

Availability

  • Edition: Community (LGPL-3). It depends only on point_of_sale.
  • Versions: 20.0 and master. It has not been backported to 19.0 or 18.0.
  • Install: update your 20.0 code, then install POS SumUp from Apps.

SumUp joins the growing list of payment terminals Odoo supports natively. In 19.0 alone, connectors for Mollie, Cashdro, Cashmatic, Safaricom, DPO Pay and iMin were added after release.
